I discovered zines a few years ago. I came across them when my daughter was on an art course, she made this delightful miniature art gallery inside a zine. It was just perfect. I was intrigued, I knew I needed to use zines in my work too.
I researched zines online and found that there is a movement if you like, with clubs, fairs and even zine libraries. I'm guessing if you’re reading this you already know what a zine is but for those that don't, in brief, it's a small independent publication for trading, mailing, or leaving in unexpected places to spark joy for strangers.
I especially love the idea of leaving them in unexpected places to spark joy for strangers.
Creators choose themes that they are knowledgeable about or have a passion for, or a lived experience. It's finding a voice and sharing it, sometimes anonymously. It's a fun, low pressure way to write, sketch, paint, collage, photograph without overthinking things too much.
Many zine creators embrace the DIY magic of zines by using printing, folding, binding, hidden pockets and interactive pages. I find the whole concept and process inspiring and wholesome. I wanted to find a way to share my art in a low cost way to bring a sprinkling of joy to someones day and zines seemed a fitting choice.
So, this year I am aiming to create various zines to showcase the many pieces of art that remain in my personal journals and sketchbooks, never having seen the light of day. My art gives me so much satisfaction and joy just creating it and I'd really love to share some of it.
